While the future of international travel remains bleak due to coronavirus, many British Columbians have used the time that they’d otherwise be spending on holidays in Europe, Asia and elsewhere to explore places closer to home.
A friend and I booked a weekend getaway to Salt Spring Island, and we excitedly planned out some activities we wanted to do and sights we wanted to see together. The town of Ganges where we stayed was laid-back and quaint. This was a refreshing change of environment from the usual hustle and bustle of Metro Vancouver.
Our days began and ended early, with the bulk of our time spent outdoors. We enjoyed hiking and walking through various parks and trails, including Ruckle Provincial Park, Mount Erskine and more. Kayaking out of Ganges and towards Goat, Deadman and the Sister Islands was fun and I admired the plethora of arbutus trees that grew on these small islands.
We enjoyed our time visiting Salt Spring and appreciated the relaxed pace of things there. Upon arriving back in Vancouver, my friend (who drove) exclaimed, “you know we’re in Vancouver because everyone is speeding and driving like they’re mad”.
