Make your Fake Christmas Tree look Spectacular

Published on November 26, 2015 by Angela Chu 14 Comments

This is our Christmas tree, it looks pretty good if I do say so myself :)

This is our Christmas tree, it looks pretty good if I do say so myself 🙂

Oh Christmas tree,
Oh Christmas tree,
How lovely are your branches ?
I am always shocked when I see fake Christmas trees being sold in stores for 200, 300 or even 400 dollars. To me, that is a ridiculously large amount of money to spend pieces of plastic and metal. For several years now, we have been using a tree that we bought from Canadian Tire for 79 dollars; besides, the holiday season is not defined by how much you spend on your Christmas tree.

I will admit that our tree is not the fullest-looking one out there; that being said, there are ways that you CAN make your tree look great, even if you’re on a tight budget! Gone are the days of having a sparse and spaced out branches, or being able to “see through the tree”… because nobody wants that, am I right?

Here are Five Frugal tips for decorating your real or fake Christmas Tree! With these tips, I hope you are able to make your fake christmas tree look spectacular 🙂

  1. Fluff the branches to make the most of you tree and prevent them from clumping with eachother. Yes, it make take some time, but trust me; it will be worth it once you start hanging those tree ornaments! Fluffing the branches also ensures that you have the maximum amount of tips to hang ornaments onto ?
  2. Use green tinsel to wrap around your tree; it will give the illusion of a fuller-looking one because it matches the colour of the branches and fills in any spots where you might be able to see through.

Ornaments like this snowflake one from Tsayrate are great tree fillers :)

  3. Hang ornaments with a BIG surface area of volume. The larger the ornament, the more space it takes up! Use this tip strategically; don’t place all the big ornaments in the same place, spread them out!
  4. Play with textures and patterns. Using a combination of shiny, matte, sparkly, patterned tree decor will create visual interest and draw the eye towards those fabulous and unique ornaments as opposed to the sparseness of your tree.

  5. Use nature to your advantage. Pinecones, holly, branches and garland all make lovely tree fillers and they can be found right in your back yard! (At least I hope so…)

I hope you can use some of these tips to make your Christmas tree look even more fabulous, whether it is a real one or a fake one. Remember to have fun, think creatively and sing something festive ❤️

Your tree looks beautiful, Angela! Great tips on decorating the trees. You are right: it is not about how much you spend…and I think it is true of Christmas in general.

What great ideas. I love decorating my tree although it might be rather a waste of time this year as we have a puppy in the house!

I have a fake tree too but I do admit to splurging and getting one with lights a few years ago. But we do all the things listed above. I like the big ornaments too. If I have time I like to wonder around the craft sales, you can sometimes get some unique things for super cheap.

Some great tips! With the combination of not being allowed to have a real tree in my apartment AND in the name of saving trees… a fake tree it is this year!

Your Christmas tree looks beautiful!! I was used to having a real tree in Rome, but here in Canada my husband has an old fake one that uses every year. We try to decorate it tastefully and have lots of lights! I will use some of your tips, thank you for sharing!

Some cool ideas here Angela. I usually just keep the lights dim. ha,ha.
I got more out of your tagline though, I love it.
“Eat, share and be merry.” I may come up with my own, thanks for the inspiration and
    have a wonderful holiday.

Thanks for these tips, Angela! I grew up always having a real tree but my fiancé doesn’t want to deal with one so we have a pathetic looking fake one. These tips will help so much 🙂 the green tinsel idea is genius!
